Youth Advisory Board

What is a Youth Advisory Board?

Diabetes Youth Services (DYS) is proud to announce we are starting our first-ever Youth Advisory Board as a vehicle for young people to become involved in a local nonprofit organization merging civic engagement
and leadership development. Our Youth Advisory Board’s mission is “Connecting
youth to the diabetes community while gaining leadership skills, developing
friendships, and having a great time!” By engaging young and enthusiastic
individuals, we strive to bring new energy into our mission-based work, while developing
future leaders in our community. The Youth board is a great resume builder and is a great way to make influential connections within the community.

Membership Criteria of Board Members

We are looking for a diverse group of young people who are hardworking and dedicated to becoming leaders within their community. Board members must be:

1. Entering grades 10-12. A diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes is NOT required to be on the board. The board is open to all students in the qualifying grades.

2. Pursuing a high school diploma, GED, or in a transition program.

3. Able to commit to one (1) school year running from Sept. to May of the following year.

4. Required attendance of monthly meetings and occasional events. Monthly meetings are normally held the first or second Sunday of the month from 5-7 PM at the Endocrine and Diabetes Center – 2100 W. Central Ave. Toledo, OH 43606

Goals of the Youth Advisory Board

1. Raise awareness of type 1 diabetes in their community while developing leadership, fundraising, and communication skills.

2. Build friendships while participating in fun and educational outreach activities.

For example: Volunteering at DYS’s Annual Fall Festival, making bracelets for newly diagnosed Type 1 children, and serving families a meal at the Ronald McDonald House.

3. Learn about diabetes and ways you can help positively impact other community members who live with diabetes.

** Applications are closed for the 2024-2025 season.
