Why Should You Celebrate Your 10 Year Diaversary?

Celebrating the day you were diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease may not seem exciting to most, but to my diabesties and I, it truly is a celebration. This June I celebrated my ten year diaversary. Ten whole years of constant poking, checking, and correcting. It definitely hasn’t been easy, but that’s what makes it worth the celebrations. I used to never celebrate my diaversary or even keep track of it until I came to DYS camp. At camp I met amazing and strong friends going through the same struggles. I remember being at camp and a friend told me it was their diaversary. I was confused because I had never heard of someone celebrating such a thing, but I quickly learned that it’s an accomplishment worth the congratulations.

The many friends I’ve made at camp have taught me that my diabetes is nothing to hide or be ashamed of. It is something to be proud of. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week managing our diabetes, so for me, ten years was something to celebrate. Living with Type One Diabetes hasn’t been easy, but it’s given me so much. It has given me a sense of responsibility, confidence in myself and my abilities, and best friends to last a life time who always understand what you’re going through. So for all of my fellow friends with type 1 diabetes out there, congratulations. I’m proud of you! You’ve come so far, and if you ever need reassurance, reach out to your friends from DYS because we’re all proud of you!
