What is Little Shots?

Summer is time for fun!  Often, parents are nervous to send their child with type 1 diabetes to camp because they are concerned about how the camp will manage their highs, lows. and even meal dosing.  Little Shots Camp is a place where parents and kids feel comfortable with diabetes.  For kids, this is often the first place they meet another child with diabetes.  For one week of day camp they do not feel different.  They are just like everyone else.  Parents have peace of mind that their child is safe and cared for with qualified healthcare professionals surrounding their child.

Little Shots Camp is like every other summer camp, but we throw in some diabetes education.  In addition to games, crafts, and fun activities, our campers learn tools to help them manage their diabetes independently.  They practice carb counting, reading labels, and learning how to give their own shots and blood sugar checks.  They experience organized, fun, learning activities, but they also are constantly learning from counselors who manage diabetes themselves and a team of medical staff helping them navigate the ups and downs of diabetes throughout the day.  Our staff is comprised of nurse practitioners, nurses, CDE’s (certified diabetes educators), young adult counselors, and a registered dietitian. They are highly qualified and are great mentors to our campers.  Ordinary interactions become diabetes teaching moments — we don’t need a classroom!

We strive to make sure that every kid is having fun and learning at camp.  We are proud that 100% of our camper parents would recommend camp to another family. Remember, if you are not local to Toledo, Ronald McDonald House partners with our Little Shots families to house not just your camper, but your entire family for the whole week of camp. For any questions please reach out to our Camp Director, Cindy at 419.291.1238 or cindy@dys4kids.org.
