Our volunteers are the backbone of DYS. Don and Connie Smith, two of our valuable volunteers, have been raising money for camp for 16 years. This year they raised $30,115. That makes the grand total raised since 2004 – $273,364. Wow! That’s a lot of campers that were able to have the experience of diabetes camp.
As most of you already know, Don and Connie started raising money for DYS when we still hosted the annual Swim for Diabetes. After we decided to retire the event, Don kept swimming and he and Connie kept raising money for camp. Every year Don Smith swam 300 laps on his birthday, February 2nd, and they solicited donations in recognition of this accomplishment. Even after they moved to Florida for retirement, they kept raising money for our campers.
This year marks the end of an era for DYS and the Smiths in that this was the last year for the Don Smith Swim. We are so grateful for all of the support that they have given our kiddos over the years. Thank you for 16 wonderful years and we so appreciate all of your efforts.
