For the last 12 years, Waterville watering hole, Mad Anthony’s Tavern, celebrates Thanksgiving weekend giving back to the community. Each year Mad Anthony’s Tavern hosts a benefit to raise money and awareness for a local organization. For the second time, this year, Diabetes Youth Services will be the beneficiary. YEAH!! So appropriate, since its Diabetes Month!
The event is organized by members of the Radiation Blues Band, acoustic/electric rock group, that began playing together in the early 1970’s. In 2007, the members decided to get together for a 30-year reunion. The band chose Mad Anthony’s since the owner, Joanne McElheney, was the band’s sound technician. Thanksgiving weekend was a natural time, since so many of the members had relocated and would be in town for the holiday. “We had so much fun that first year that we decided to do it again the next year and pass the hat for a local charity,” says Joanne, “It just took off from there adding more bands to make it an all-day event.”
After the loss of several band members, the remaining group changed the name to a Memorial Benefit to celebrate their friends. The “Radiation Remnants”, as they are choosing to be called, will perform, again, as part of the event.
Joanne knows, first-hand, the difference that DYS can make for a family managing a child with type 1. Her niece loves camp and the family programming. Thanks Joanne, and the rest of the Radiation Remnants! We can’t wait for the concert.
The benefit will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018, starting at 2:00 pm. Admission to the event is free. Raffles will be available and donations will be collected. For more information and a list of performing bands, please go to www.dys4kids.org/events.
