Syd: For six years, I went to DYS Hot Shots camp as a camper and for the last 7 years I have been a camp counselor. I have loved every moment being involved with this great organization—meeting new friends and role models, being able to help educate others about T1D, and just being able to spend time with others managing diabetes who understand exactly how I feel. After meeting my fiancé Corey 4 years ago, he wanted to be more involved with helping me with my diabetes. He’s been so supportive throughout the years! He’s always changing my insulin cartridges, getting me juice boxes when I’m low and has spent the last 2 years at Hot Shots camp learning and growing as much as he can. Corey wants to know and understand what T1D is and how it impacts many different people. He’s been a wonderful fiancé and I can’t thank him enough for all he does for me, my diabetes, and for DYS.
Corey: Being the fiancé of someone who has T1D has really changed my life. Before I met Syd, I didn’t know anyone with diabetes or even know what T1D was. When we first started dating, she actually made me a few diabetes education worksheets and a list of diabetes fun-facts. She has taught me so much about her lifestyle and how she handles managing diabetes. It has only driven me to look into more ways as to how I could be helpful—which is how I got involved with DYS! Many people hear the word “diabetes” and get the wrong idea. I’ll admit, I was one of those people, but I was taught what diabetes is and have had hands-on experiences with it now. I see first-hand that T1D wasn’t caused by the choices she made, but rather it was a lifestyle that choose her. Syd taught me that as long as you take care of yourself it will not keep you from achieving your goals in life. Being with Syd has made my life so much better. I love her and am so happy that I have been able to help support her throughout the years and have been involved with DYS.
